ZDF Mediathek Playon plugin

I updated teh ZDF Playon plugin to support the revamped Mediathek. Grab, unzip and pop into the plugin folder and restart the server.

Works great! it means my German wife can watch German TV onDemand via the PS3
connected to our TV.

Well, currently I watch ARD through XBMC but I see that for many people that
isn't an option (you'll need an Xbox or a computer). I'll have a look at it if
there isn't a plugin, yet. The ZDF Xbmc plugin is broken, this is why I wrote
this.

For a while I didn't even know that ARD had their own.

I am trying to download the ZDF plugin but I only get a message that the
document is edited and not accessible at this time. How can I download the file?

Rolf, I was able to download it and its working, however its not a smooth video
- it stutters even though I have a big enough bandwidth (3Mbit) to not max out
with the video download and my playon server is fast enough (dual core).
Is that
a problem that only I see?

On the ZDF website, when watching their program on a
computer, I can pick if I have a ISDN, 1Mbit or 2Mbit+ connection. Which stream
do you tap into?

I found that the ZDF video's were buffering quite a lot, they are good quality,
so probably quite large.

The buffering is usually down to the latency of your
wireless network...you need to use wires. I solved it by connecting both the
Playon server (my laptop) and the PS3 to the Router via Cat5 cables. Buffering
has gone.


@Rolf
as far as I can see, your ZDF plugin is the only
plugin or script that delivers any German content via Playon.

ARD MediaTek
would be great... my wife misses Verbotenne Liebe :-)

Yes, there are a couple of things I ought to be doing. There is a quality
setting in Playon and I should honor that, ZDF has three quality settings.

For
the buffering only the connection to the Playon server is relevant, there is no
buffering otherwise unless that PS3 does it internally - I don't own
one.

Several people have asked for ARD and I have looked at it and I can do it.
There are some serious shortcomings in the Playon API and I'll have to see
whether I can reasonable work around it. I was going to do it last weekend but
then there is always something else...

Thanks! The plugin is great! Now I can enjoy some more German TV. It would be

I read on the plugins board about the troubles you were having getting
the ARD MediaTek streams to work..... have you made any headway? seemed like you
were finding it very tough...

I got the low quality streams to play but any combination of parameters I could
possibly think of would not. I can pull down the streams with rtmdump or
flvstreamer, so there is nothing odd about the protocol. You can even watch a
stream at this site (I plugged it in for testing). But Playon seems to be bugged
or can somehow not talk to the media server. I am 99% sure it's not an issue on
my end.

I meant to shoot Playon support an email but I highly doubt they will
jump on it. Now that you remind me I will do it later today.

Hi Rolf, good luck with playon support... i have had varying degrees of success
with them :-)

Do I understand you correct in that the low quality streams work?
if thats the case, to be honest, that would be better than nothing...
